Mokopane Exploration

Mineralised zones of Platreef

The Mokopane Project area was intensively explored from 1970 to 1991, which culminated in the identification of five mineralised zones of Platreef, namely the South-West, Central, North-East, North-West and Far North Anomalies. A bankable feasibility study completed in 1992, focusing on the PGE and nickel mineralisation identified at the South-West Anomaly, indicated acceptable metallurgical recoveries. Prevailing economic conditions were, however, not conducive to developing the deposit and the project was halted. Since 1992, sporadic exploration took place in the Mokopane Project area, including three diamond drill holes completed by Falconbridge to explore a massive sulphide target to the east of the Platreef outcrop.

Apart from the South West Anomaly, none of the anomalies have been drilled to the resource definition stage. The limited drilling of the Central Anomaly, indicates that Ni-Cu and PGE mineralisation of higher grade than the South West Anomaly may occur. AIM is planning to carry out further exploration at the Mokopane Project in order to improve the delineation of the South West Anomaly and gather further data to enable the estimation of resources for the remaining anomalies.
